This is it! This is the real cover for Martian Divides. Here’s what happened:

I wasn’t happy with the spaceship on the first cover design. IMHO, it looked more like a toy than a piece of sophisticated technology that could travel through space. I know, in space the shape of the ship doesn’t matter. But beyond that, it didn’t look anything like the spaceship I’d ‘designed’ for the Martians in my novel.

One of my pet peeves is when a book cover fails to represent anything in the story. Been Blued depicts a group of people looking up at planet Earth. It depicts the Martian hope for finding a human solution to their dilemma. I couldn’t have done better if I’d had the talent to create the cover myself. It was exactly like I described.

The cover of Martian Blues depicts alien ships hovering above Earth, an indication of the upcoming attack. True, those ships didn’t look very sophisticated either but the important thing was that readers would recognize the ships as ‘not from Earth.’ That resulted in an unexpected problem. People liked them too much. They kept stealing the posters I put up for my book signing. I had to replace them–twice! Oddly enough, when I changed the poster to include both book covers they stayed put.

None of the available artwork was the least bit suitable for the Martian ship. I thought a galaxy might be more fitting since the Martians wanted to go back into space. When the galaxy was added it didn’t just replace the ship. It filled up the whole sky. The effect was literally from day to night.

Unfortunately, the file that went out to Internet booksellers somehow managed to get the spaceship back. As you can see the published cover doesn’t have it. The correct file has been sent out but when it gets changed is up to each website.

Thanks for reading.  🙂

Thanks for the story behind the cover! I think you made a good choice: no spaceship.

    Phyllis,

Nice cover. Very nice indeed. I think you made a great choice.

I especially like the small figure and the shadows across the land.
